Design of Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets provide an opportunity to add subtle style without overpowering a room. White is timeless, while more playful hues such as blue or pink add pops of color without being overwhelming.

Shaker-style doors blend in seamlessly with both modern and traditional kitchen designs, being available with either a thin frame for modern looks, or wide one for transitional designs. Display cabinets featuring metal grate fronts offer another way to show off contents without leaving additional opportunities for dust to accumulate.

Material

Kitchen cabinets are one of the key features in any space, defining its overall style and character. Because of this, it is crucial that we select materials carefully in order to obtain optimal results.

Solid wood cabinets provide natural texture and beauty. Oak, for instance, boasts decorative grain patterns as well as shock, abrasion and moisture resistance properties that make it suitable for many design styles.

Wood veneer cabinets are an increasingly popular option that uses less wood than solid wood cabinets, yet can still be refinished to repair scratches and nicks. Polymer or thermofoil cabinets come in an assortment of colors with matte finishes that mimic certain varieties of natural wood and can even be painted to mimic certain colors perfectly. Polymer or thermofoil cabinets offer durability at an economical cost, making it an excellent alternative option when budget constraints need be met while still wanting natural looks.

Style

Cabinet styles can make a tremendous impactful statement in your kitchen, especially cabinet door styles that range from cottage or traditional to transitional or contemporary.

Framed wall cabinets feature a classic look with their face frame featuring inset doors and drawer fronts for a timeless appeal. Popular choices for such cabinets are shaker doors, which boast simple yet elegant design features; beaded inset doors feature 1 1/4 inches bead around each panel frame to add texture while stained finishes can further elevate their elegance.

There are also framed frameless cabinets, which lack a face frame but feature hinges hidden within the cabinet box for a contemporary aesthetic. Available with full overlay or partial overlay door styles. Additional options for these cabinets may include louvered panels with spaces between each slat that provide ventilation – ideal for humid areas; or push to open hardware that allows people to open cabinets without using handles for a seamless, modern appearance.

Finish

Finishes are an integral component of cabinet design that can make an immediate statement in your kitchen. Depending on their style and material selection, cabinet finishes can either accentuate or diminish their aesthetic qualities.

Laminate and melamine finishes are highly popular due to their durability and ability to replicate the appearance of wood grain surfaces. Furthermore, these finishes come in many styles to fit into any aesthetic or design scheme.

Stains are an effective way to accentuate the unique characteristics of cabinet materials while simultaneously adding warmth and texture to a space.

Paint can be an extremely flexible choice that allows for creative expression in your kitchen design. However, any new finish must first be tested on scrap wood before applying it to cabinets in order to avoid an unattractive blotchy and uneven appearance that requires additional staining or even glazeing for softening appearances.

Storage

Cabinets can be designed with multiple storage solutions in mind to keep the kitchen organized. A drawer divider allows you to easily store different types of cookware while a door rack keeps small items such as spice jars within easy reach. A chalkboard installed on one or more cabinet doors allows users to record inventory or hold notes; and design expert Emily Henderson created a kitchen command center which kept cleaning supplies and mail conveniently accessible.

Wall cabinets typically only measure 24 inches deep, leaving little space to store a complete set of dishes. A tall cabinet provides more vertical storage space for items like brooms or other accessories – plus, they make great pantry storage solutions!
